Many items in medieval times were marked with the heraldry of the owner, from clothing to jewelry and from dishes to castles. The coat of arms was a mark of status, lineage, and ownership--and can be compared to the use of logos and "My Name Is..." stickers in today's culture.

Italian Portrait Platter

Whether the face filled the entire plate or merely a central medallion, portrait plates were very popular in Italy, with examples just within our source files spanning from the 1400s to after 1640. While some were simply of "bella donnas" anonymous beautiful women, others were in truth portraits of individuals, and sometimes a couple--a wedding portrait often with the date of the wedding somewhere on the piece.
